How to make transparent video overlays, free

Make animated overlays with a transparent background for Premiere Pro, Final Cut, DaVinci Resolve, CapCut and OBS: which tool to use, which format to export, and step-by-step settings. Free, in your browser.

A transparent video overlay is a short animation with no background: a title, a lower third, a subscribe button, a sticker or a frame. Because the background is empty (an alpha channel), only the animation shows when you lay it over your own footage. No green screen and no keying.

The quick answer

Open an overlay template in gizzMotion, type your words, set Background to None and export a ProRes 4444 MOV (Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve) or a transparent WebM (CapCut, OBS, web). It is free for 396 templates, runs in your browser and needs no account. Unlimited exports on every plan.

The four ways to get a transparent overlay

Which format for which editor

Step by step

  1. Pick an overlay from building blocks, captions, social & reviews or emoji & memes.
  2. Type your text, set your colours and size. Pick the frame: 9:16 for Reels, TikTok and Shorts, 16:9 for YouTube.
  3. In Style, set Background to None. The checkerboard shows it is transparent.
  4. Export For editing (transparent MOV) or WebM, at 1080p and 30 or 60 fps to match your footage.
  5. Drop the file on the track above your video in your editor.
