How to use a transparent video overlay in your editor
Export animations with a transparent background (ProRes 4444 MOV or WebM) and place them over your footage in Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve or CapCut.
A transparent overlay is a video with no background. Only the animation shows, so you can lay it over any clip, just like a sticker that moves. No green screen, no keying, no cutting anything out.
1. Make the background transparent
In the Style tab set Background to None. Many designs start that way already: every emoji effect, every meme template, the game overlays, map overlays such as the Floating globe (transparent) and Country to country (transparent), and hook stickers like Word-pop captions.
Two more settings matter for an overlay. Turn Shadow off, because a drop shadow baked into the file rarely matches your footage, and set Corner radius to 0 so no rounded corner is cut out of the frame. Templates that are built as overlays already default to all three.
2. Export the right format
- Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, After Effects: export MOV. It is ProRes 4444 with an alpha channel, the standard for transparent video.
- CapCut desktop: export WebM, which CapCut reads with transparency. The link for it sits under the main export button.
- Posting straight to an app, with no editor: export MP4 and give the design a background color, gradient or image.
In the export panel, choosing For editing sets the background to None and switches the format to MOV in one step. Transparent exports need Chrome or Edge on a computer.
3. Place it in your timeline
Import the file and put it on a track above your footage. In Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve the transparency works straight away; there is no key, no blend mode and no alpha setting to change. Scale and position it like any other clip.
4. If you see a black background
Work through these in order.
- Check the file is a MOV or a WebM, not an MP4. MP4 cannot store transparency, so a transparent design becomes black.
- Check the Style tab really says Background: None. A dark gradient looks close to black in a small preview.
- Check the editor. CapCut ignores the alpha channel in ProRes files, so use WebM there. Some phone editors ignore both, in which case export with the Green background and key it out.
- If the preview in your browser looks right but the file does not, export again in Chrome or Edge on a computer.
Which format for which editor
- Premiere Pro, After Effects, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve: MOV (ProRes 4444).
- CapCut desktop: WebM (VP9 with alpha).
- Phone editors that cannot read alpha: MP4 exported with the Green background, then keyed out.
- A still sticker or a thumbnail: Export PNG, which is transparent when the background is None.
Tested with real editors
Transparent MOV exports are ProRes 4444 with an alpha channel. We check every change by decoding the files with Apple's own video decoder, the one Final Cut Pro and Premiere Pro use on a Mac, and by placing them over footage in Premiere Pro at 720p and 1080p, 30 and 60 fps.
File sizes and render times
ProRes 4444 is a high-quality editing format, so files are large: a few seconds at 1080p is often 20 to 60 MB. That is normal, and your editor compresses the final video when you export it.
WebM with alpha is much smaller but far slower to encode, because it is compressed frame by frame in the browser. A short overlay that takes seconds as a MOV can take a minute or more as a WebM. The export panel shows an estimate for each before you start, so you can decide.
Good overlays to start with
- Comedy beats: Comic sound effect and Giant emoji slam.
- Reactions: Emoji explosion and Emoji rain.
- Captions: Word-pop captions and Caption bar.
- Travel: Floating globe (transparent) and Country to country (transparent).
- Gaming: Block game – Advancement toast and #1 Victory banner, covered in the gaming edits guide.
Stills, green screen and the other ways out
Not everything needs to be a video. Export PNG with the background on None gives you a transparent still, which is what you want for a thumbnail element, a sticker on a photo post or a graphic in a slide.
If your editor lives on a phone and cannot read an alpha channel at all, set Background to Green and export an MP4. You then key the green out in the app. It is not as clean as an alpha channel around soft edges and shadows, but it works everywhere.
Checklist before you export
- Background is set to None in the Style tab.
- Shadow is off and corner radius is 0.
- The aspect ratio matches the clip you are laying it over.
- The frame rate matches your footage, usually 30 or 60 fps.
- The animation finishes inside the video length, so nothing is cut off.
Questions people ask
Can I export transparent video on a phone?
No. Transparent MOV and WebM need Chrome or Edge on a computer. On a phone you can still edit, preview and export MP4 and PNG.
Why not just use a green screen?
You can, and the Green background exists for phone editors. But keying leaves green edges around soft shadows and semi-transparent pixels. An alpha channel keeps them clean.
Does the overlay have a watermark?
No. Exports carry no watermark, on the free plan or on Pro.
Can I loop an overlay?
The preview can loop, but the exported file is a single pass. Repeat it on the timeline in your editor, or raise the number of times the animation plays in the Motion tab before exporting.
