How to make emoji reaction overlays
Make emoji explosions, emoji rain and floating reactions with your own emoji or images, and export them as transparent overlays.
Emoji effects add energy to reactions, reveals and kids content. They are also the fastest thing to make here, because there is almost nothing to type. You can have one exported in under a minute.
1. Pick an effect
Start from Emoji explosion, Emoji rain, Emoji fountain, Emoji reactions or Zigzag emoji trail. They all run the same engine, so whichever you open, the Motion setting can switch it to any of the ten paths: Float up, Zigzag, Explosion, Rain down, Fountain, Spiral out, Drop and bounce, Pop around, Conga wave and Orbit.
Alongside them, emoji & memes has the single-hit versions: Giant emoji slam for one huge emoji landing with a screen shake, Comic sound effect for a comic starburst with a word in it, Emoji slot machine for a slot machine, Emoji rating meter for a rating meter and “Deal with it” glasses for the pixel sunglasses.
2. Choose your emoji
Pick from the tabs (Faces, Hearts, Hands, Party, Animals, Food, Fun, Symbols) or load a ready-made pack: Love, Hype, LOL, Party, Shock, Money, Kids or Spooky. You can mix as many as you like, and the effect draws from the whole set.
3. Set size, amount and speed
- Sizes: Mixed, Small, Big, Grow or Same. Mixed makes most of them small with a few large ones, which looks closest to a real burst.
- How many: around 18 to 30 is lively without covering the frame. Above 50 the screen turns to soup.
- Speed and Spin control how fast they travel and how much they tumble.
- Shockwave ring: a ring that expands from the center on an explosion, with its own color.
- White sticker outline: a thin white edge around each emoji, which helps them read over busy footage.
4. Use your own images
Each of these templates accepts up to three uploaded images, and they fly with the emoji. Faces cut out of a screenshot, a logo, or a sticker of your pet all work. PNGs with a transparent background look best, and the images stay on your device.
5. Export transparent
Emoji effects start with no background, no shadow and square corners, so they are ready to export as a MOV, or a WebM for CapCut, and drop straight onto a track above your clip. If you want to post the effect on its own, set a background color or gradient and export MP4 instead.
Placing it in your edit
An emoji effect is a reaction to something, so it should start on the frame the thing happens, not a second later. Put the overlay on a track above your clip, drag its start to the beat, and trim the tail rather than slowing the effect down.
If the effect needs to start a moment after the cut, use the start delay in the Motion tab instead of leaving a gap in the timeline. That way the file itself is correctly timed and you can reuse it.
Which motion to use
- Explosion: reveals and punchlines.
- Rain down: laughing or crying moments.
- Fountain: money, wins and celebrations.
- Float up: gentle reactions, like hearts on a live stream.
- Zigzag and Drop and bounce: playful kids and family content.
- Orbit and Spiral out: a subject in the center of the frame that the emoji circle around.
- Conga wave: a line of emoji crossing the screen behind a cut.
Settings that look good
- 18 to 30 emoji, sizes on Mixed, speed at the default.
- Two or three emoji types, not eight. A burst of three faces reads; a burst of everything is noise.
- 60 fps for explosions, rain and anything fast. 30 fps is fine for float and orbit.
- Turn the sticker outline on for footage that is bright or cluttered.
- Two to three seconds is usually enough. Longer and the joke is over before the effect is.
Common mistakes
- Covering the subject. Keep the count down, or use a motion that travels around the frame rather than through the middle.
- Exporting MP4. The transparent background turns black. Use MOV or WebM.
- Running the effect the whole clip. An emoji burst is punctuation. Put it on the beat and take it off.
- Uploading a JPG with a white box. Use a PNG with transparency, or the white square flies around with it.
Questions people ask
Can I use any emoji?
Yes, including flags, families and skin tones. They are drawn with the emoji font on your device, so they look like the emoji on your platform.
Can I loop the effect?
The preview loops, and the exported file is one pass. Raise the number of times the animation plays in the Motion tab, or repeat the clip in your editor.
Is there sound?
No. Every export is silent. Add the whoosh or the boom in your editor.
Can I make the emoji bigger than the frame?
Use Giant emoji slam for that. It drops one giant emoji with a screen shake, shockwave rings and a caption such as "NO WAY!".
Can I use one effect as a still sticker?
Yes. Export PNG and you get a transparent still of the frame the preview is showing, which works as a thumbnail element or a sticker in a photo post.
Why do my emoji look different from someone else's?
Emoji are drawn with the font on your own device, so an iPhone, an Android phone and a Windows computer each render them in their own style. Export from the device whose emoji look you want.
